GoErie: Downtown Erie Innovation District hopes to be game-changer

The plan for Erie’s innovation district calls for a focus on cyber security and safety in the new economy, working to establish security needed for what’s often referred to as the Internet of Things.

Karl Sanchack, installed four months ago as CEO of the Downtown Erie Innovation District, hopes the public will be patient. Developing a job-creating innovation district focused on security, intelligence and safety could take time, he said.

But he wants to be clear about one thing: He’s thinking big.

Hyland Hackathon challenges high school and college students; winners announced

WESTLAKE, Ohio - The third annual Hyland Software hackathon produced an increased number of area students looking to showcase their ideas in technology. A total of 78 students competed, up from 66 last year and 55 in 2015.

The weekend event that saw students sleeping in hallways and under tables in their sleeping bags, began Friday evening, December 15 and ended with the project judging on Sunday morning. Hyland's global headquarters on Clemens Road in Westlake was the scene of the event.

Data science students take honors with 'Phoodie' app

Members of Mercyhurst University’s newly formed Data Science Club created a food delivery app called “Phoodie” to snag second place in this year’s uber competitive Hyland Hackathon held in Westlake, Ohio, Dec. 15-17.
